Benefits of Catnip

Catnip also called catmint or field balm, is a plant in the mint family. This perennial plant originates in Europe and is found in the wild across the U.S and Canada. It is also found in my garden.
You may be familiar with catnip’s euphoric effects on cats, often found in cat toys and it can change a cat’s behavior. My cat knows when I am headed out in the direction of the catnip and lets me know he is wanting a treat.
DID you know catnip also has health benefits for us too? However, I wouldn’t go to the pet store for your catnip. You want to be sure your catnip is food grade quality.
When catnip is dried and used in tea, the hot water releases compounds, which you both inhale and consume as you drink. Based on the presence of these compounds, catnip tea has wonderful health benefits.
Medicinally, catnip has been used for the following: Strengthens the immune system Relief for common cold and other upper respiratory infectionsEffective decongestant andAlleviate sinusitis AsthmaFluFever, helps to induce sweatingRelief for migraines and other headachesGastrointestinal (GI) upset, including indigestion, colic, cramping, and gas (flatulence) and diarrhea Treat intestinal crampsIncreases urinationAids nervousness and nervous disordersInduce menstruationCatnip may cause uterine contractions and can also cause a woman’s period to start earlier, so catnip tea isn’t advised for women with pelvic inflammatory disease or those with heavy menstruation, as it can aggravate both symptomsIncrease appetite Helps to have better sleep and with insomnia In case you have a scheduled surgery, you should stay safe by avoiding catnip for at least two weeks before. There is a concern that catnip may slow down the Central Nervous System (CNS) and cause sleepiness. Anesthesia and various drugs used in during surgery may have the same effect on the CNS.
I do sell bags of catnip for your enjoyment.
If you are under any medication, ensure that you consult your physician to know whether catnip or any other herb is safe for you. As catnip may interact with certain medicines containing lithium as well as sedative medications.
